Who can take part in the TANDEM programme?

Basically, any student of the University of Münster can be placed in the programme who has a basic knowledge of the target language and is willing to teach another person his/her own mother tongue. If you aim to receive credit points (ECTS) for the tandem course, you need a C-test result of at least 31 points.

How do I apply for the TANDEM programme?

You apply through the online system on the TANDEM homepage. Please try to make your answers as detailed as possible so as to increase your chances of finding a suitable TANDEM partner. For instance, you can also include information about cultural interests or hobbies.

For how long is my application valid?

The application is valid for one semester. If we are not able to find a partner for you at the beginning of the semester, we will try our best to find one for you in the course of the semester. Should you, for this reason miss the introductory session, please come and see us during office hours to find out more.

How long will it take until I get a TANDEM partner?

We will try to get you a TANDEM partner as soon as possible. Please understand that placement for very frequently or very rarely requested languages can take a little longer.

How will I know if I have a TANDEM partner or not?

Once the placement is successful, we will send you an email with the contact information of your TANDEM partner. In any case, do please come to the introductory session of the TANDEM program. Often placements can be arranged on the spot!

What happens after I get a TANDEM partner?

You should contact your partner personally and organize a meeting.

If you want either support through the Language Centre of the University of Münster, ECTS points or a course certificate, please first of all assess your current language level with a C-Test.

Then attend the introduction to the TANDEM program and make use of the Language Counselling Service at least twice per term. In order to gain ECTS points, you must also take part in an evaluation session at the end of the semester.

How does the language learning in TANDEM work?

You can organize your learning in TANDEM the way you want. You must, however, observe the basic rules: to meet for two hours at least once a week and devote one hour to each target language. To optimize your learning in TANDEM we would advise you to make good use of our Language Counselling Service! Reflect upon and evaluate your learning process regularly, and either take notes after every meeting or write a short text (see Logbuch).

Why should I take advantage of the Language Counselling Service?

The WWU Language Centre offers a TANDEM introduction at the beginning of every semester. In addition, there are the Language Counselling Service, workshops in which different aspects of learning a foreign language are dealt with (e.g. learning goals, strategies, partner feedback, correction options, materials etc.) as well as the evaluation interviews. Autonomous language learning needs a bit of practice, but the Language Centre will help you be successful!

"One of the things that I really enjoyed was that we could meet outside of the university and I learned words and phrases as I experienced things. I feel like this also helped me learn more about the culture in Germany and specifically in Münster because we went to places such as the Weihnachtsmarkt and my Tandem Partner pointed out things that I probably wouldn't have noticed or understood by myself. I also had the opportunity to eat my only home-cooked German meal at my Tandem Partner's house; goulash that was sehr lecker!" (Grant, USA)
